Odd and Even Numbers

Odd Number: Any integer (not a fraction) that cannot be divided exactly by 2. The last digit is 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9

Even Numbers: Any integer that can be divided exactly by 2 is an even number. The last digit is 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8

We can count in consecutive odd numbers:

1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 and so on

We can count in consecutive even numbers:

0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 and so on

Here are some facts to remember:

  • All even number can be devided exactly by 2.

  • They always end in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8.

  • All odd numbers are 1 more (or 1 less) than a multiple of 2.

  • They always end in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9.

The final digit in a number indicates if number is odd or even. For example : 45.789 is even number ends with 8, which is an even number.

The final digit of a multiole of an even number is always even. For example:  458.651 cannot be in the 2, 4, 6, 8 or times table because the final digit is 1, which is an odd number.

We can make general statements about odd and even numbers. For example:

odd x odd = odd              even x even = even                     odd x even = odd
