Key facts:  

Clause consists of two parts: 

  • the subject (who or what the clause is about) 
  • the predicate (the rest of the clause, which must include a verb). 

simple sentence consists of just one clause. 

The wind blew strongly. 

(The wind: subject, blew strongly: predicate)

A compound sentence is made up of two or more clauses of equal weight, joined by coordinating conjunctions for, and, nor, but, or,  yet,  so. 

Remember those conjunctions using the acronym FANBOYS. 

Example: 

The wind blew strongly. (simple sentence) 

The boat moved quickly. (simple sentence) 

Compound sentence : 

The wind blew strongly so the boat moved quickly.

 

Conjunction 

Meaning  

Example 

For 

Shows cause 

My sister walked home from school slowly for she was tired. 

 

And 

Similarities 

The train was full and I had to stand up. 

 

Nor 

Two things that didn’t happen / are not happening / will not happen. 

He doesn’t smoke nor drink. 

But 

Shows differences 

I enjoy reading but I don’t enjoy cooking. 

 

Or  

Two options  

I’m going to buy a new laptop or I might buy a new mobile phone. 

 

Yet 

Contrast (surprise) 

She has a mobile phone yet she doesn’t know how to make a phone call. 

 

So  

Shows effect (result) 

My brother dreamed of being an actor so he went to drama school.

Combine these simple sentences and make them into compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).

1. Maggie had completed her run. She was covered in dust.
